NewNovelist Novel Writing Software

It is perfectly possible to write a book without novel writing software, but NewNovelist will make your job so much easier.

Let's deal with a few basic questions right off...

  • How much does it cost? $60 or £33, even less if you opt for the download-only option (without the CD).
  • Is it simple to download and install? Yes, very. And it takes up minimal space on your hard drive.
  • Is it guaranteed? Yes. NewNovelist comes with a no-quibbles 28-day money back guarantee - so you really have nothing to lose.
  • Are they an established, reputable company? Absolutely. They have had tens of thousands of satisfied customers over the years.

Fine. But what do you get for your money? Why should you buy this novel writing software? What is in it for you?

The first thing to say is that NewNovelist is a full-spec word processor. Big deal, I hear you say. Your computer already has a perfectly good word processor.

True. But NewNovelist's word processor has an added column on the right with various icons inside it, including one for Characters, one for Places, one for Research, and so on.

The idea is that all the notes you make during the planning stage of writing your novel (notes on characters, notes on theme, notes on setting, research notes, notes on anything else you can think of) are kept in the files in this right-hand column.

So as you develop your novel using the word processor in the centre of the screen, all of your planning notes are right to hand, just a mouse click away.

But that isn't all...

NewNovelist has a further column to the left of the central word processing screen containing storytelling prompts. Whatever stage you are at in your novel, the icons in this left hand column hide a wealth of information on what should be happening next at this particular point in your story.

I have read all that information, and it is a perfect companion to the plotting notes on this website. Here at Novel Writing Help, I have divided writing a plot into 3 sections: Beginnings, Middles and Endings. I've subdivided each section into 3 or 4 sub-stages. And guess what? The reams of plotting notes you find on NewNovelist follow exactly the same scheme you find on this Web Site - which makes us perfect companions!

In a nutshell, everything you need to write a novel is right there in front of you on one screen...

  • Planning notes on the right
  • Storytelling prompts on the left
  • Word processor in the middle for writing

And you really don't need to be a genius to use NewNovelist. Here is what happened when I bought the novel writing software and first fired it up...

On the first screen, I simply had to hit a button to "Start a New Novel". (Here, I could have also imported previous novels in progress from earlier versions of the software.)

The next few screens were all about selecting the type of novel I wanted to write...

  • Was it plot-based (like an action novel)?
  • Was it character-based (like a drama)?
  • Or was it an "epic"?

If the novel I wanted to write was plot-based...

  • Was it a "puzzle"-type story?
  • Did it fit into the "capture and escape" subcategory?
  • Was it an "underdog triumphs" story?
  • Or was it one of the other 7 possible subcategories?

Needless to say, all these terms are explained in great detail on NewNovelist.

Eventually, I arrived at the main screen (the one with the column for notes on the right and storytelling prompts on the left) and away I went.

The beauty of this novel writing software is that I was then free to work on whatever aspect of my novel I chose...

  • Did I want to flesh out a character? One click on the "character" icon on the right and the screen expanded to allow me to do this.
  • Did I want to make a few research notes? Block out a chapter? Read up on how to make that tricky transition beween a novel's beginning and middle?

I could do what I wanted, in the order I wanted to do it. Whatever I did, everything was right there at my fingertips. And there was a comprehensive Help section in case I got stuck.

I could go on, but I think I've shown you the essence of what NewNovelist novel writing software is all about. I wanted to find some bad things to say, but to be honest there aren't any - or none that are significant.

Okay, the word processor has a thesaurus and dictionary (you can choose between English and US versions) but it lacks a grammar checker. Anyone who knows anything about grammar, though, will know they are worse than useless.

And the storytelling notes can sometimes sound a little eccentric. They call your central character's goal "your hero's quest" (very mythological!) But that's okay. The quality of the instruction is high. And if you want you are free to ignore the storytelling hints anyway and do it your own way.

All in all, this is a great piece of novel writing software at a very fair price. For More Information, Click Here.

Like I said earlier, NewNovelist won't write a single word of your novel for you. But whether you are a complete beginner or a more experienced novelist, it will make getting organized (and staying organized) a breeze - and in a process as complicated as writing a novel, that is no mean feat. Oh, and it will help to make the whole novel writing process fun, too!
